Virginia PRIMA History

The Virginia Chapter of the Public Risk Management Association (PRIMA) serves public sector risk management professionals throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. We help our members grow professionally through meetings and events that increase their knowledge and expertise in risk management safety, insurance, and other vital areas. Chapter events also provide members with ample opportunities to network with other risk management professionals, share ideas and best practices, and make new connections.

Virginia PRIMA was founded as a joint chapter with North Carolina PRIMA shortly after national PRIMA was formed. Eventually, board members representing Virginia PRIMA decided to form their own chapter with representative risk managers from the major cities in Virginia. The chapter introduced an annual spring conference and supported the Virginia RIMS Conference in the fall. In 2010, Virginia PRIMA separated from RIMS and developed its own ‘Hot Topic’ one day summer series that includes a southern BBQ lunch, and is free to all members.

The chapter’s annual spring conference is one of the premier events of the year. Attendance has grown from 75 participants to more than 180 in 2026.

Three Virginia PRIMA members have served as leaders at a national level. Two have served as president and two as board members of the Public Entity Risk Institute (PERI).  Two members have also been recognized as the Risk Manager of the Year.

In 2018, Virginia PRIMA was an honored recipient of PRIMA’s Chapter Achievement Award.
